Ideation
The beginning of this project was rooted in pure immersion. I spent hours watching one runway show after another, studying collections from various designers and seasons until I came across one that truly resonated with me. That moment of connection happened when I discovered the recent Artisanal 2024 collection by John Galliano for Maison Margiela. From the very first viewing, I was captivated by its theatricality, rich storytelling, and intricate craftsmanship.
Research
Once I had chosen the collection, the real work began. Our task was to analyze the collection in its entirety—not just from a surface-level fashion perspective, but through a critical lens that considered every detail: silhouette, styling, fabric, mood, and meaning. To do this effectively, I watched the show multiple times, pausing to take notes on each look and how it contributed to the collection’s overall narrative. I also dove into extensive research, reading runway reviews, designer interviews, and critical essays that unpacked the layers of symbolism embedded in Galliano’s design choices. Understanding the deeper context behind the visuals—whether historical, cultural, or emotional—allowed me to approach the analysis with greater insight and intention. This deep-dive not only strengthened my interpretation of the collection, but also enriched my appreciation for fashion as a form of storytelling.
Dissection & Critical Analysis
To truly understand and critically engage with the Maison Margiela Artisanal 2024 collection, I approached each garment as a standalone work of art, dissecting it piece by piece. Rather than simply observing the aesthetics, I analyzed the construction, silhouette, textile manipulation, and layering techniques used throughout the collection. I paid close attention to the specific details Galliano employed—such as distressed finishes, raw hems, corseted structures, and unconventional tailoring—which collectively contributed to a haunting, romantic narrative. Each look felt like a deliberate nod to both the past and the present, prompting me to dive deeper into the collection’s underlying inspirations. I explored the historical references Galliano was drawing from, such as Edwardian and Victorian underpinnings, 1930s cabaret culture, and even post-war glamour, all of which were reimagined through a deconstructed, avant-garde lens. I also considered how Galliano’s work conversed with other designers, from the theatricality of Alexander McQueen to the rebellious spirit of Vivienne Westwood, recognizing Margiela’s own legacy of anonymity and anti-fashion subtly present beneath Galliano’s flamboyance. Through this layered dissection, I was able to develop a more meaningful interpretation of the collection—not just as clothing, but as a commentary on identity, nostalgia, and the human condition.
Organize & Write
Once I had gathered all my research and fully dissected the Maison Margiela Artisanal 2024 collection, I moved into the process of organizing and writing the paper. My goal was to present my analysis in a way that flowed logically while still capturing the emotion and complexity of the collection. I began by outlining the key sections: introduction, historical and conceptual context, garment analysis, visual storytelling, and a concluding evaluation. This structure helped me maintain clarity and ensure that each point built on the last. I crafted the introduction to briefly set the stage—highlighting John Galliano’s vision, the Maison Margiela brand legacy, and the relevance of the collection within today’s fashion landscape. From there, I broke the body of the paper into focused sections, each dedicated to a specific element of the collection—such as silhouettes, fabrications, and references—making sure to tie every observation back to the central theme. I made deliberate word choices to reflect the dramatic tone of the show, while also balancing creativity with clear, critical thinking. Throughout the writing process, I referenced my notes, runway screenshots, and secondary sources to support my interpretations. This phase of the project helped me sharpen my ability to articulate visual and emotional cues through writing, transforming abstract design details into a cohesive, compelling analysis.
Outcome:
Overall, I believe the outcome of this paper was a strong reflection of both my analytical and creative abilities. I was able to effectively organize my thoughts and structure the content in a way that flowed logically, guiding the reader through each layer of the collection with clarity and intention. More importantly, I feel that I articulated my observations in a way that demonstrates a deep understanding of fashion as both an art form and a reflection of culture. Through this project, I proved my ability to not only break down the technical and visual elements of a runway show but also to interpret their deeper meaning and relevance within a historical and contemporary context. Writing this paper reinforced my confidence in discussing fashion critically, and it showcased my capability to communicate complex design concepts in a way that is accessible, engaging, and professional. It was a valuable opportunity to merge research, creativity, and storytelling; skills that are essential for any role in fashion communication, merchandising, or editorial work.
